They’re back! … and I don’t just mean the travellers.
One day when we were in an Internet Cafe in southern India we met a family not unlike ourselves. They were from Canada, had a boy and a girl and were travelling the world from August 2007 to August 2008. Rick and Claudette James, their daughter Alex and son Luke are from Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. We spent some time with them and then planned on meeting them again in Egypt. We had an excellent time in the White Desert of western Egypt. Ask me about listening to Monty Python under the stars.
Before we parted ways we decided to meet again in Europe, this time in Nice, France. But that was not to be the next time because we met them again in a railway station in Italy. We rode together to Nice and spent some time together in southern France. The James headed through Europe and then on to Eastern Canada and we later headed to Argentina … but we kept in touch.
Coincidentally we both ended up in Calgary at about the same time and Janice’s sister, Val, invited them to their Stampede BBQ. It was great to see them again. Rick James had been following this “snowfree.tumblr.com” blog and had emailed us to say that he might be able to help with the retrieval of the photos that I had reformatted off of my memory card.
When Rick arrived at the BBQ, he acquired the offending camera card and went directly to the computer. On the Internet he checked out Simon Mill’s (Connor’s friend from Ottawa) software suggestion for getting those photos back. It wasn’t the thing due to Windows peculiarities but we DID find software called ParetoLogic. To make a long story a bit shorter … “they’re back - the photos !” … about 80% of them. It cost $50 and a fair amount of time, but the magic of software came through. I am happy, Rick James has another notch in his belt of computer fixes and I have about 500 more photos and videos to work with.
Thanks Rick James.

Note: If you ever mistakenly delete a photo, reformat a camera card or find that your camera card has been corrupted, don’t throw up your hands. DO NOT TAKE ANY MORE PHOTOS ON THAT CARD. Try “Google-ing” something like “photo recovery” or “image recovery” and go from there. There are fixes. Those prized travel photos can return.
